Like most rodents, squirrels keep their teeth short and sharp through constant chewing and gnawing. Anything wooden serves the purpose. Soffits, eaves, siding, and attic timbers all fall prey to squirrel damage. Worse, this animal has a taste for insulation and plastics. A single doomed squirrel chewing on transformer wiring can cut power to an entire neighborhood. Telephone lines, power lines, and PVC water pipes outside the home and in the walls are fair game, adding the risk of electrical shorts, fire, and expensive water leaks.
Removal Is Trickier Than It Looks
Removing squirrels and preventing their return can be tricky. Blocking access to the attic at the wrong time of day can leave them trapped inside. Squirrels will bite and scratch when cornered, and poisoned bait can leave a dead squirrel to decompose inside a wall.
