Opossum

Opossums are the only marsupial native to North America and are found all over the state of Florida. Ranging in weight from 4 to 13 pounds with a long, furless tail, they look like rats and are about the size of an average house cat.

Opossums are not the brightest bulb in the marsupial chandelier. They are slow-witted and not picky about their diet. They forage in garbage cans, gardens and eat road kill, which attracts them to suburban and urban neighborhoods. Opossums are immune to the bites of many venomous snakes and have few natural predators other than dogs in residential areas.

The Opossum Is A Night Worker

The opossum is nocturnal and needs a nest or den to sleep in during daytime. Opossum dens are found in attics, crawl spaces and inside walls. Being opportunistic feeders, an opossum may enter a home through a ripped screen, open window, air conditioning vent or through gaps in siding.

Homeowners should not be fooled by the slow, lumbering movement of the opossum or by their odd behavior when confronted. A surprised opossum rolls on its side and plays dead but bites with very sharp teeth when picked up.
